Chauvin Trail Verdict

The killing of George Floyd served as a catalyst for conversations about racial justice and anti-Blackness in the country. We acknowledge that this egregious act of violence and the subsequent trial affected our immediate community in various ways. As the Chauvin trial reached a verdict, we invited the Titan community to join us in this installment of the program as a space for dialogue, affirming the importance of community, and begin the lengthy and challenging process of unlearning the hierarchy of human value so that we can heal.

Violence and Harassment During the Pandemic

This dialogue was centered on the increased violence and harassment towards Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American (APIDA) communities during the pandemic. Titans were invited to this space to process the impact of hateful acts and build community through the sharing of lived experiences.

The Double Standard of Protests

Following the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, there was a lot of discussion on the double standards of treatment of the rioters from the U.S. Capitol insurgence and the protesters from Black Lives Matter. The purpose of this dialogue was to create space for participants to share their perspectives on the disparities between the treatment of rioters and protesters in the U.S. this past year.

Self-Care and Politics

In collaboration with Dr. Portia Jackson Preston, faculty member in the department of Public Health. Civic engagement and the elections results have been on the forefront of many individuals’ minds in November 2020. This session was intentionally focused on helping participants find ways to take care of their own mental, emotional, and physical health post-election results.

US Presidential Election Explained

In collaboration with Academic Affairs and the CSUF Civic Engagement Committee. Titans were invited to join this panel of academic scholars for a nonpartisan explanation of our country’s Presidential Election Process. This session explained history, context, and the process that the United States utilizes to elect the next President.

Allyship in Action

Violence and harassment towards the APIDA community has increased in the country since COVID-19. With harmful rhetoric like the "perpetual foreigner" myth has risen to the levels of physical and verbal violence and harassment. The purpose of this critical conversation was to provide ways to transform allyship in racial equity into action. Participants shared dialogue on what allyship means to them and ways that they have taken action towards allyship.

In collaboration with Dr. Bey-Ling Sha, dean of College of Communication. For many, the fall break and holiday season means coming together with close friends and family, and possibly some difficult conversations. This session taught attendees skills that could help them navigate difficult conversations about politics and election results when returning home for break.
