Preventing Workplace Injuries and Illnesses

It is estimated that only 4 percent of all work-related accidents are caused by technical issues such as faulty equipment. Establishing and maintaining a safe work environment can therefore significantly reduce up to 96 percent of all work-related accidents. Important pre-injury activities include:

  • Promoting safety awareness
  • Ensuring that those operating power equipment or handling hazardous materials have received all appropriate training
  • Including health and safety concerns in performance evaluations
  • Promoting attendance at training
  • Seeking input regarding health and safety concerns
  • Evaluating work areas when health and safety concerns arise
  • Taking corrective action when established safety procedures are not followed
