What is Parental Leave (Maternity/Paternity/Adoption Leave)?

Parental Leave (commonly referred to as Maternity/Paternity/Adoption Leave) is a paid leave of up to 30 days*, associated with the birth of an employee's own child or the placement of a child with the employee in connection with adoption or foster care. This type of absence is not charged against the employee's leave credits, and the amount of paid days received is based on employee category.

*The benefit for Unit 3 employees is 50 days.

How many days of Paid Parental Leave am I eligible to take?

Faculty (R03)*-- 50 days**

 Does paid Parental Leave apply to Adoption or Foster Care?

Yes. Paid Parental Leave is a paid leave of up to 30* work days in a calendar year for the birth of an employee's child or the placement of a child with the employee through adoption or foster care.  

*The benefit for Unit 3 employees is 50 days.

How soon am I required to commence my Paid Parental Leave?

Reduction in workload in lieu of parental leave. Upon request of the faculty unit employee and approval of the appropriate administrator, a faculty unit employee with an academic year appointment may be given a reduced assignment over one academic term in lieu of a fifty (50) day parental leave, as follows:

  1. A workload reduction of at least sixty percent (60%) (at least 9 WTUs) for one semester, or
  2. A workload reduction of one hundred percent (100%) (15 WTUs) for one quarter.

Does the 30 Days of Paid Parental Leave need to be taken consecutively?

Yes. The paid parental leave days should be taken consecutively, unless mutually agreed to and pre-approved in writing by the employee and the appropriate administrator(s).​
