Part-Time Faculty Pool
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at CSU Fullerton invites applications for its part-time faculty pool in Spanish to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Spanish language, Hispanic literatures and cultures, and/or Hispanic linguistics.
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers diverse programs of language, cultural studies, linguistics, literature, and teacher education aimed at meeting the varying needs of today's students. Its Spanish program teaches an array of interdisciplinary courses, from elementary language classes to advanced seminars, and delivers the following academic degrees and programs:
- Master of Arts in Spanish;
- Master of Arts in Spanish with a concentration in Chicana/Chicano Studies;
- Bachelor of Arts in Spanish;
- Minor in Spanish;
- Certificate of Spanish for Hispanic Media;
- Certificate of Completion for courses in Spanish for Health Professions;
- General Education courses.
First-year courses are five units per semester. All other courses are three units per semester, offered in a face-to-face mode. Areas of Specialization
We are seeking highly motivated, well-organized individuals to teach in the following subject areas:
- Spanish language (introductory to advanced)
- Hispanic literatures and cultures
- Hispanic linguistics
Candidates for upper-division courses (300 level and above) must hold a Ph.D. or ABD in Hispanic literatures and cultures, Hispanic linguistics, or a related field, and possess native or near-native fluency in Spanish. Preference will be given to candidates who have prior teaching experience at the college or university level and can furnish evidence of strong teaching. An ability to work effectively with a broad mix of student ages and students from culturally diverse backgrounds is also highly desirable. Candidates holding a terminal M.A. degree are also welcome to apply, but will be considered for lower-division language courses (100 and 200 level) only.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.
The fall term begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the spring term runs from the end of January through the end of May.
Appointment and Salary
All part-time faculty appointments are made as Lecturers, under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the CSU system and the California Faculty Association. Initial appointments are for one semester only. Salaries vary depending upon qualifications. Regular performance evaluations of part-time lecturers are made by the department according to the terms of the approved Department Personnel Standards and the University Policy Statement (UPS 210.070). Positive reviews are based upon written teaching philosophy, student ratings of instruction, course materials, and in-class observations made by a full-time faculty member. In addition to classroom instruction, part time faculty are required to provide opportunities for student consultation outside of the regular class hours; on-line discussion periods or e-mail contacts shall not be a complete substitute for face-to-face consultation periods.
