Parental leave is a paid leave associated with the birth of an employee's own child or the placement of a child with the employee in connection with adoption or foster care. Paid parental leave does not utilize the employee’s available leave credits. This type of leave runs concurrently with any other related leaves for which the employee is eligible, such as FML. You must submit the Request for Formal Leave of Absence application with medical certification to Academic HR in CP-700.
Faculty currently have two (2) parental leave options: 30-day parental leave or 40% workload reduction.
Thirty (30) Day Parental Leave:
Number of Eligible Paid Days: 30 Days
Timeframe Guidelines: This leave must begin within a one hundred and thirty-five (135) day period, which begins sixty (60) days prior to the anticipated arrival date of the new child, and ends seventy-five (75) days after the arrival of a new child. The leave credits are charged only for academic days in such period of time.
Forty Percent (40%) Workload Reduction:
Number of Eligible Paid Days: One academic term at a workload reduction of 40% (Your pay is not reduced during this time).
Timeframe Guidelines: The one hundred and thirty-five (135) day window does not apply in this case. However, the parental leave should be initiated within one (1) year of the birth of the child or placement of the child with the employee in the case of adoption or foster care, per article 22.15 in the Unit 3 collective bargaining agreement.
