Part-Time Faculty Pool
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at CSU Fullerton invites applications for its Part-Time Faculty pool in Japanese to teach undergraduate courses in Japanese language, culture, literature, linguistics and/or film (beginners to BA level).
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers diverse programs of language, cultural studies, linguistics, literature, and teacher education aimed at meeting the varying needs of today's students. Its Japanese Program teaches an array of interdisciplinary Japanese courses, from elementary language classes to advanced seminars, and delivers the following academic degrees and programs:
- Bachelor of Arts in Japanese;
- Minor in Japanese;
- Concentration in Japanese for the Bachelor of Arts in International Business;
- Intermediate Japanese Language and Culture Certificates as well as General Education courses
First and second year courses are five units per semester, all other courses are three units per semester, offered in a face-to-face mode. Areas of Specialization
We are seeking highly motivated, well-organized individuals to teach in at least two of the following subject areas:
- Japanese Language, Introductory to Advanced
- Japanese Culture, Intermediate to Advanced
- Japanese Literature, Intermediate to Advanced
- Japanese Linguistics, Intermediate to Advanced
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or ABD in Japanese Studies or related field, and possess native-like fluency in Japanese. Preference will be given to candidates who have prior teaching experience at the college or university level and can furnish evidence of strong teaching. An ability to work effectively with a broad mix of student ages and students from culturally diverse backgrounds is also highly desirable.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.
The fall term begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the spring term runs from the end of January through the end of May.
Appointment and Salary
All part-time faculty appointments are made as Lecturers, under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the CSU system and the California Faculty Association. Initial appointments are for one semester only. Salaries vary depending upon qualifications. Regular performance evaluations of part-time lecturers are made by the department according to the terms of the approved Department Personnel Standards and the University Policy Statement (UPS 210.070). Positive reviews are based upon written teaching philosophy, student ratings of instruction, course materials, and in-class observations made by a full-time faculty member. In addition to classroom instruction, part time faculty are required to provide opportunities for student consultation outside of the regular class hours; on-line discussion periods or e-mail contacts shall not be a complete substitute for face-to-face consultation periods.
