Director, School of Music

California State University, Fullerton seeks a Director of the School of Music, at the rank of tenured Associate Professor or Professor, who is an outstanding artist/scholar/teacher and an experienced administrator with a forward-looking vision.  We seek an individual who is deeply committed to supporting excellence across all music disciplines in a collaborative manner and who shares CSUF values and dedication to building a diverse, collegial community.  Candidates who are able to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the campus community demonstrated through strength in teaching, research and service will be strongly considered.

The School of Music
For over fifty years, the School of Music has been training students for professions in the music field.  CSUF has a legacy of alumni actively engaged within music professions throughout Southern California, the United States, and internationally.  Fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1966, the School of Music is a comprehensive unit in the College of the Arts and offers undergraduate and master’s degrees in performance of western classical music, jazz, and commercial music; as well as music education, conducting, composition, music theory, piano pedagogy, and music history.  For more information about the school, please visit

The ideal candidate is an artist/scholar who can demonstrate a successful teaching and leadership record in a university setting and who displays high energy, research excellence, and a commitment to diversity, technology, collaboration, and program development.  The successful candidate will lead the way in defining and implementing a vision for the School of Music, with the goal of enhancing its strengths and keeping it competitive with respect to today’s changing academic climate and the challenges newly confronting higher education, particularly in the arts and humanities.  The Director is expected to seek the advice and recommendation of his/her colleagues while conducting School of Music affairs in a collaborative and democratic manner.  The Director is typically appointed for a three-year term, with opportunities for re-appointment based on departmental election.

Rank & Salary
This is a full-time, 12-month appointment, and is a tenured position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.  Salary is competitive and commensurate with rank, experience, and qualifications.  Salary is subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases.  An excellent comprehensive benefits package is also offered, which includes health/vision/dental plans; spouse/domestic partner/dependent fee-waiver; access to campus childcare; and a defined-benefit retirement through the state system along with optional tax-sheltering opportunities.
