Training Coordinator/Counselor (Licensed Psychologist)
California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) is seeking applications for a full-time, 12 month, tenure-track position of Training Coordinator/Faculty Counselor in Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Under the general supervision of the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services, the Training Coordinator carries a variety of duties, including clinical services to students, outreach programming, and consultation services to campus community (55%); the development and delivery of training models, recruitment, supervision, training and evaluation of trainees (40%); and other duties as assigned (5%) by the Director.
Direct Counseling Services: Provide intake clinical interviews and psycho-diagnostic assessments, short-term individual and couples counseling, group counseling, wellness workshops and psycho-educational groups, clinical triage and crisis intervention, case management and collaboration with other providers, and referrals to and consultation with academic and disability specialists/counselors and health center professionals on-campus as well as off-campus mental health professionals and agencies.
Coordinator of Clinical Training: In collaboration with the CAPS Director, develop and maintain a comprehensive clinical training program for masters, pre-doctoral and post doctoral trainees. Build alliances with and act as liaison to training/accreditation organizations (such as ACCTA and APA) and academic programs. Organize didactic and skills training programs on a variety of relevant topics for trainees as well as for their supervisors. Provide direct clinical supervision and oversee the provision of individual and/or group clinical supervision by qualified CAPS counselors. Provide clinical training and guidance on case management issues (e.g., review written records/case notes and videotapes; monitor and facilitate trainee caseloads). Provide verbal and written evaluations of trainees' performance, facilitate an assessment of the quality of clinical training and supervision, and intervene with remediation and/or training as needed. Select and train new clinical supervisors. Maintain the programs APA accredited status. Write and submit an annual report to the CAPS director on the activities of the training program.
Outreach Services: Develop and provide outreach programs (e.g., classroom presentations; wellness workshops, etc.), including occasional evening or weekend programs, for a metropolitan, largely commuter campus with a highly diverse student population; participate in the development and implementation of assigned special outreach projects (e.g., mental health screening days; prevention projects; Student Wellness Fair; etc.).
Consultation: Provide expertise to the university community regarding issues that affect the educational, developmental and psychological well-being of students; provide consultation services and occasional in-service training to faculty, administrators, and student leaders on mental health and developmental issues.
- Doctorate in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an accredited program.
- Licensed as a Psychologist for a minimum of two years; if licensed as a Psychologist in another state, must be eligible to attain California Psychologist licensure within one year of employment date.
Experience and Skills: The candidate must demonstrate experience with the following:
- Issues pertinent to a diverse college student population.
- Prior experience serving in the role of training/clinical coordinator or administrator (2 years minimum) in a mental health setting.
- Clinical Supervisory experience.
- Intake clinical interviews, including psycho-diagnostic assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment plan formulation, for students with a broad spectrum of psychological problems, ranging from adjustment issues to major psychiatric disorders.
- Short-term individual, couples and group counseling, and crisis intervention for psychological emergencies and high risk clients.
- Knowledge, sensitivity and ability to work with students from diverse ethnic, cultural, sexual orientation, and socio-economic backgrounds, ranging in age.
- Ability to develop and implement a broad range of outreach services, including consultation/mediation interventions, training modules, workshops, and presentations to the campus community on mental health issues and stigma reduction approaches.
- Working effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Computer skills for electronic record keeping.
- A background check (including criminal records check) and pre-employment fingerprinting must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. - Specialization in an area pertinent to CSUF college students (e.g., sexual identity development; immigration and acculturation issues; trauma work; suicide prevention).
- Experience and interest in coordinating counseling groups for students.
- Experience and interest in providing outreach services and counseling to address underserved students.
- Experience and interest in the provision of supervision to pre-doctoral interns.
- Experience and interest in the APA internship accreditation and sustainability process

In the CSU system, this position is classified as a Student Service Professional – Academically Related Level II – tenure track. This is a full time 12 month position. Counselors in the CSU system serve as members of the academic faculty unit and are represented by the faculty union. Counselor faculty earn full tenure generally through a six year tenure process. Salary is competitive and is commensurate with experience and qualifications, however, there is no guarantee that an offer will be made above the beginning salary.
