Bereavement Leave

Authorized leave with pay due to death of a significantly close relative. Refer to union contracts for definition of "significantly close relative". (Note: Some Bargaining Units use the term "Funeral leave" for this type of leave.)

Unit Contract Definition of "Significantly Close Relative" Article
R01 The term "significantly close relative" as used in this Article shall only mean the spouse and the employee's or his/her spouse's mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, grandchild, son, son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, brother, sister, or relative living in the immediate household of the employee. 15.13

The term "significantly close relative" as used in this Article shall mean a spouse, domestic partner and the employee's or his/her spouse's mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, grandchild, son, son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, brother, sister, or relative living in the immediate household of the employee. 15.17
R03 The term "immediate family" as used in this Agreement shall refer to the employee's spouse or domestic partner, parent, grandparent, grandchild, son, son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, stepchild or stepparent of the employee, spouse or domestic partner, and close relative or persons residing in the immediate household of the employee (except domestic employees or roomers). Also included in this definition shall be any minor children or incapacitated individuals for whom the employee has primary responsibility or legal guardianship of conservatorship. 23.3
R04 The term "significantly close person" as used in this Article shall only mean a spouse and the employee's or his/her spouse's mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, grandchild, son, son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, brother, sister, or person living in the immediate household of the employee except domestic employees and roomers. 20.11
R06 The term "significantly close relative" as used in this Article shall only mean a spouse and the employee's or his/her spouse's mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, grandchild, son, son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, brother, sister, or relative living in the immediate household of the employee. 18.17
R08 The term "Significantly close person" as used in their article shall only mean a spouse and the employee's or his/her spouse's father, mother, grandmother, grandfather, grandchild, son. Son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, or person living in the immediate household of the employee except domestic employees and roomers. 22.10

Eligibility:

All employees are eligible for Funeral Leave (FL) except for the following:

  • Volunteers
  • Graduate Assistants
  • Resident Assistants
  • Note Takers
  • Readers
  • Student employees
  • Retired Annuitants (except those participating in the Faculty Early Retirement Program)
  • Special pay classifications, e.g., summer session, extension, special session, special consultants, substitute faculty.

Usage:

To be entitled to use Bereavement Leave, an employee must be eligible and in active employment status.

The table below outlines the number of Bereavement Leave days an employee is entitled to according to the union contract definition.

For each death of a significantly close relative or an immediate family member as defined in Provision 15.9, upon request to the President, the employee shall be granted five (5) days leave with pay. 15.15
R03 Upon request to the President, a faculty unit employee shall be granted a two (2) day leave of absence with pay for each death in the immediate family. Upon request to the President, the faculty unit employee shall be granted three (3) consecutive days leave of absence with pay if the death in the immediate family requires that a faculty unit employee travel over five hundred (500) miles from his/her home. 23.1
R04 For each death of a significantly close person, upon request to the President, the employee shall be granted two (2) days leave with pay. If such a death of a significantly close person requires the employee to travel over five hundred (500) miles from his/her home, upon request such a leave with pay shall be granted for three (3) days. 20.9
R06 For each death of a significantly close relative, upon request to the President, the employee shall be granted one (l) day leave with pay, either the workday immediately prior to, including, and/or following the day of the funeral. If such a death of a significantly close relative requires the employee to travel over five hundred (500) miles round-trip from his/her home, upon request such a leave with pay shall be granted for (2) days. Limited hourly employees are eligible for funeral leave if they are scheduled to work at the time of the funeral and will be paid the number of hours they were scheduled to work. 18.15
R08 For each death of a significantly close person, upon request, the employee shall be granted two (2) day's leave with pay. If such a death of a significantly close person requires the employee to travel over five hundred (500) miles round-trip from his/her home, upon request such a leave with pay shall be granted for three (3) days. 22.8

Attendance Recording:

On line 7C on the STD 634 form, enter "BE" for bereavement leave on the day(s) of absence. In section 5, enter the employee's relationship to the deceased.
